Excitement was in the air in Nairobi on May 27 as the Les Roches alumni in Kenya were about to have their first gathering as a chapter. The gathering was held at the Laico Regency Hotel and included guests such as Hon Najib Balala, Minister of Tourism, Kenya, Mr Charles Kutwa, Chairman of the International Hotel & Tourism Institute (IHTI), Ms Lucy Karume, National chairman of The Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC), Mr Josphat Ngali, Principal of International Hotel & Tourism Institute (IHTI), Mr Pimo Mazurczak, Regional Admissons Director, Laureate Hospitality Education, Mr Francis Clivaz of Clivaz Foundation (brother of Marcel Clivaz founder of Les Roches) and Young SKAL Members.

During one hour some of the guests honored the gathering with presentations regarding the hospitality industry in Kenya today as well as the development of Swiss international hospitality education.

Our honorary guest, the Minister of Tourism Hon. Najib M. Balaala, E.G.H.M.P explained in a very down to earth speech today's Kenya. He also mentioned the work of Laureate Education, and especially his appreciation of Les Roches, as Marcel and Francis Clivaz have been present in Africa for many years.

After the presentations it was time for refreshments and networking opportunities. There were approximately 25 Les Roches alumni present. “It was great to see everyone together under one roof after so many years” says Chapter president Hussein Kurji. “People have really excelled and grown up but there are still a lot of memories we hold from up there in the Alps”. Not all alumni are still in the hospitality industry, some are lecturers, others have started their own businesses and yet others have ventured into more mainstream businesses. Wherever they work, Les Roches still bring back happy memories.

A big thank you to the organisers Wanjala Sio and Jacquie Wangari as well as Les Roches Alumni chapter presidents Nitin Kapoor and Hussein Kurji.
